Cast Iron is a Ferrous Alloy that consists of mainly Iron with the addition of Carbon (approx. 2%-3.5%) and Silicon (approx. 1%-3%). Other elements can be added as well to change the microstructure and physical properties of the metal. The Carbon in Cast Iron cools as Graphite that separates from the solution of molten metal during the cooling process. Cast Iron can be produced with Nodular (Ductile Iron) or Flake (Gray Iron) Graphite . Both have their advantages and disadvantages, depending on the application or mechanical property needs.
