New Facility Almost Finished

Our new facility on Rayford Rd, 1 mile east of I-45, in Spring, TX.  The new facility will more than double our square footage and allow us to not only improve the efficiency and flow of all work done, but also allows us the ability to increase the amount of testing we can provide to our clients.  The facility will have a separate area for inspection purposes that will have direct access to the shop and has a large window viewing into the SEM laboratory, with images from the SEM on a large screen tv.  We will also have the ability and space to expand our chemical and mechanical testing, allowing us to serve our clients and help them obtain correct and timely reports.  Come see us soon at our new building and let us help you with your testing needs.

Cast Iron

Ductile Iron

Gray Iron

Cast Iron is a Ferrous Alloy that consists of mainly Iron with the addition of Carbon (approx. 2%-3.5%) and Silicon (approx. 1%-3%).  Other elements can be added as well to change the microstructure and physical properties of the metal.  The Carbon in Cast Iron cools as Graphite that separates from the solution of molten metal during the cooling process.  Cast Iron can be produced with Nodular (Ductile Iron) or Flake (Gray Iron) Graphite .  Both have their advantages and disadvantages, depending on the application or  mechanical property needs.  Please contact EPI-MTG for more information or assistance you need with the metallurgical examination of your Cast Iron material.

Metallurgical Polishing and Chemical Etching

Metallurgical polishing is a tricky business.  EPI MTG is well versed in the techniques to polish many different materials.  We have polished metals that are Iron, Nickel, and Aluminum based.  We also have experience with PCD and a variety of carbides.  We can also provide chemical and electrolytic etching of the sample after polished to a fine finish.  We have the ability to etch most all alloys from using Nital on carbon steel to molten sodium hydroxide on silicon nitride.  EPI MTG hopes to work with you in the future with your metallurgical polishing and etching needs.

OTC Has Come and Gone

A bit over a month removed from this year's OTC conference we must say hi,
and thank you to all of our existing clients that stopped by our booth, and to all of the new hands that we got to shake as well.  It was great to see/meet all of you and we look forward to working with all of you in the near future. EPI MTG is a Materials Testing and Failure Analysis Laboratory located in The Woodlands, Tx just North of Houston.  We can provide Destructive and non Destructive Testing, Mechanical Testing, Elemental Analysis (OES & SEM), X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD), Microscopy from 6.5x on the Stereoscope up to 20,000x on the Scanning Electron Microscope.  We provide metallurgical sample preparation and polishing, along with chemical etching for microstructural analysis.  Our Engineering Department provides Finite Element Analysis and 3D CAD Drawings along with working on any and all Failure Analyses.  Again, thank you for coming by to say hi.  We hope we answered all of  your questions and if not, please feel free to call us.

Finite Element Analysis

F.E.A. is a computational analysis tool. There are three primary parts to an FEA model: The input loads on a model, the mesh of a model, and the output data of a model. FEA is used to simulate a sketch or 3D drawing of a part under some user-input loading conditions such as force, torque, heat, electricity, etc. The mesh is a subdivision that takes one large object and mathematically reduces it into hundreds or thousands of much smaller objects connected together. This allows increasingly accurate to real-life behavior in of the model. The FEA user sets up their program in such a way that it can provide results such as resulting stress through the whole model or in certain directions to look for stress concentrations, temperature distribution to look for hotspots, voltage distribution, and many others. The user has to analyze the resulting data and compare to calculations and/or empirical data to determine whether the data is accurate or the model will need further refinement. FEA can be a useful tool but one that requires some experience and verification to have confidence in the results.
